Concrete support for those facing the journey of pediatric oncology
The Help Desk is a service dedicated to families with children and adolescents undergoing cancer treatment at the San Matteo Polyclinic in Pavia. It was created to provide concrete support, practical guidance, and assistance during the most delicate moments, starting from the time of diagnosis, with special attention to those coming from afar or from abroad.
The Help Desk addresses urgent needs that often require guidance: documents, rights, permits, financial support, and access to public services. It offers personalized, knowledgeable, and compassionate help to deal with the practical aspects of illness, reduce bureaucratic burdens, and reclaim time, energy, and peace of mind for caregiving.
It is part of the national project “Growing Together” promoted by FIAGOP (Italian Federation of Parent Associations in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology), co-financed by the Ministry of Labor and Social Policies – Directorate General for the Third Sector and Corporate Social Responsibility – and works in synergy with the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology department of San Matteo and with the services already active at AGAL.
What it offers
Activation of rights and protections
- Initiation and support with applications for disability status, attendance allowance, and Law 104 benefits.
- Guidance for parents to ensure timely access to parental leave and work permits.
- Orientation on support measures, document collection, and online submission of applications through the social welfare office.
Administrative and bureaucratic assistance
- Support with completing forms and medical or administrative procedures.
- Help with booking appointments, collecting, and submitting documents.
- Direct contact with agencies and institutions.
Social and legal guidance
- Connection to other AGAL services: accommodation, transportation, schooling, and psychological support.
- Legal advice for foreign citizens undergoing treatment regarding the application for a temporary residence permit for medical care, to regularize their stay in Italy.
Who is it for?
For all families with children receiving treatment in the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology department at the San Matteo Polyclinic.
- Children with cancer and their families, especially those facing long treatment periods or coming from other regions or countries.
- Parents and caregivers with complex needs or in need of guidance on rights, benefits, and services.
- Healthcare professionals in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology as support for the comprehensive care of the patient and family.
